Naturism in New Zealand: laws and customs →
Nudity required

Rotota Sun Club is a non-profit, member-run naturist club and a member of the New Zealand Naturist Federation, on the shores of Lake Ohakuri, in the geothermal area of central Waikato (Mihi), between the lake and native forest. It is a spartan, isolated place: no mains electricity (solar-powered lighting, gas for cooking and the fridge) and little phone signal, which is part of its charm. You can swim in the lake, fish, kayak, walk in the bush, soak in natural hot streams and under a thermal waterfall, and in the evening there is the hot tub and the glow worms; during holiday periods the club organises evenings. For visitors there are sites, three club caravans, two cabins and a family bach, with shared showers and kitchens. Non-members are welcome from Labour Weekend to Easter, only with an online booking at least three days in advance: anyone arriving without one is turned away. Nudity is required except in bad weather or for health reasons; the code of conduct forbids photos without the consent of those present, phones in the club room, sexual behaviour in common areas and any discrimination based on sexual orientation, and does not allow pets (except authorised assistance dogs). Children welcome, always under supervision because of the geothermal hazards.
