Naturism in the United States: laws and customs →
Clothing optional

Rock Lodge Club is a private naturist club founded in 1932, one of the first permanent nudist communities in the United States, on over 140 acres of woodland in the Ramapo Mountains of New Jersey, about an hour from Manhattan. Run as a cooperative by volunteer members, it is affiliated with AANR and The Naturist Society. The heart of the property is a spring-fed lake with two beaches — Sandy Beach, the more social one, and Rock Beach, more secluded — where nudity is mandatory, as it is in the hot tub and sauna; elsewhere on the property clothing is optional. Non-member visitors must fill in a form and be pre-approved, and may stay only at weekends and on public holidays; members at any time. The club declares itself open to everyone regardless of age, background, sexual orientation and gender identity, and also welcomes those who come alone. In summer the calendar includes events and parties for the community; more than one guest nonetheless describes a family-friendly, relaxed atmosphere, with a mostly mature crowd on weekdays. It offers private rooms in the two historic buildings (the 1907 Stone House and the Bungalow) as well as sites for tents and RVs.
