Association-run campsite of the GCU (Groupement des Campeurs Universitaires), the association that runs around eighty campsites in France: the one at Port-Leucate is the only one reserved for naturists. It lies inside the Village Ulysse, in the naturist area of Leucate between the lagoon and the Mediterranean, on about two hectares with 83 flat, sandy pitches and two small mobile homes, some fifty metres from the long, supervised naturist beach; the pool, tennis courts, shops and restaurants are those of the village, all within walking distance without having to get dressed. It works like a club: to stay you have to join the GCU (annual membership open to anyone, which can also be taken out on arrival), everyone takes turns helping with reception and cleaning, and the association asks that you understand French; a member may bring at most two non-member guests. Communal life revolves around aperitifs, Saturday dinners and games of pétanque, and the place also suits families. The pitches have little shade and it is often windy, which makes the area very popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers; for walkers there is the clifftop path to La Franqui. Those who have stayed appreciate the location, the clean washrooms and the friendly atmosphere; some, however, especially visitors from abroad, felt unwelcome among the regulars, and some struggled to book. Dogs are allowed under the GCU rules (except category 1 and 2 dogs).
